Mother
Mother is an ongoing project I’ve been shooting with my mom, Iris Antola, as well as the inspiration for my short film, My Mother’s Shangri-La. It is rooted in my childhood memories of playing in her closet and discovering a treasure trove of old and new; things she bought in Kashmir or Iran in the 1960s, mixed with finds from a Neiman Marcus Last Call Sale in the 1980s. I can still feel her elegant fabrics against my skin when she held me as a child. Her style has always been her own. Now in her 70s, her petite figure wears everything as beautifully as I recall. In this series my focus is on her body, portraying her form as my distinct memory. Only her hands show the passage of time.
